Family and Self
Family and Self
The grains of some of the sheets of plywood upon which I burn my images include complicated curves that suggest the business of our contemporary lifestyles. Other pieces contain flaws such as cracks, gouges, or multiple knots. On these pieces, I burn figures who encounter frailness and in need of repair. On two pieces I connect parts of my artwork with gold leaf giving new life to the wood and figure. This is similar to the Japanese art of "Kintsugi," the connecting of pieces of pottery with lacquer and gold dust.
I thank the Italian artist, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1556) for the inspiration to burn self-portraits. Her work influences me about the importance of capturing my likeness, promoting my art with self-portraits, and rendering my hands large and useful. With these hands, I create art.
